Job Description
Research Scientist – Melting Research (Engineering) Grade Level 6 – 8 - 10 (depending on education, experience) Job Summary The Research Scientist (Engineering) in the melting research group will support research and technical programs aimed at improving existing glass melting and conditioning processes as well as development of new rapid melting technologies that are more energy efficient, less capital intensive and are designed for flexible manufacturing. This position will be responsible for equipment design, material selection, modeling of equipment and materials, design of experiments to determine suitability of equipment and materials proposed for glass melting systems. Principal Accountabilities - Assist in modeling and selection (mechanical, strengths, processes, fluid flow). - Planning and execution of experiments related to improving existing melting and conditioning technologies. - Support research into new rapid glass melting technologies. - Participate in the development of promising melting technologies into commercially viable processes. Qualifications Required - Experience developing processes intended for use in the manufacture of glass or similar material highly desirable. - Knowledge of glass chemistry desirable - Knowledge of modeling techniques and tools - Knowledge of heat transfer, fluid flow, strengths of materials - Knowledge of combustion and vacuum systems desirable - Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, and as part of a multi-disciplinary team. - Proficient with Microsoft tools: Word, Excel, PowerPoint Competencies Required - Results Oriented - Highly Motivated - Team Player - Self Starter - Excellent communications skills and ability to work with all levels of manufacturing and engineering personnel. - Project Management Skills - Strong Analytical Skills - Focused on practical application of research results Education, Experience and Travel Requirements Education: Candidate must have an advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Materials Engineering/Science, or equivalent and 0 to 5 years of industry experience. Experience in the glass container or similar industry is highly desirable. The travel requirements for this position will be about 10% of the time.
