<title>Research Scientist (Pittsburgh, PA)</title>

<description><![CDATA[Research Scientist – Melting Research (Engineering) Grade Level 6 – 8 - 10 (depending on education,  experience)  Job Summary  The Research Scientist (Engineering) in the melting research group will support research and technical programs aimed at improving existing glass melting and conditioning processes as well as development of new rapid melting technologies that are more energy efficient, less capital intensive and are designed for flexible manufacturing.  This position will be responsible for equipment design, material selection, modeling of equipment and materials, design of experiments to determine suitability of equipment and materials proposed for glass melting systems.  Principal Accountabilities  - Assist in modeling and selection (mechanical, strengths, processes, fluid flow). - Planning and execution of experiments related to improving existing melting and conditioning technologies. - Support research into new rapid glass melting technologies.   - Participate in the development of promising melting technologies into commercially viable processes.  Qualifications Required - Experience developing processes intended for use in the manufacture of glass or similar material highly desirable. - Knowledge of glass chemistry desirable - Knowledge of modeling techniques and tools - Knowledge of heat transfer, fluid flow, strengths of materials - Knowledge of combustion and vacuum systems desirable - Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, and as part of a multi-disciplinary team. - Proficient with Microsoft tools: Word, Excel, PowerPoint  Competencies Required  -  Results Oriented - Highly Motivated - Team Player - Self Starter - Excellent communications skills and ability to work with all levels of manufacturing and engineering personnel. - Project Management Skills - Strong Analytical Skills  - Focused on practical application of research results  Education, Experience and Travel Requirements Education:  Candidate must have an advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Materials Engineering/Science, or equivalent and 0 to 5 years of industry experience. POSITION SUMMARY: The Quality Assurance Manager must provide strong leadership for individuals across all levels of the Quality Assurance organization. He/she must have the desire and ability to participate in a collaborative team-based environment to support the accomplishment of company goals while remaining focused on individual goals and the contribution of the Quality Assurance Department.   DUTIES: Responsible for assuring compliance with the Quality Management System and overall responsibility for the Quality Assurance Department.  Responsible for planning, coordinating and directing quality control programs designed to ensure continuous improvement in production of products and conformance to all established standards. Direct supervision of employees in the Quality Assurance Department; teach and facilitate total quality management tools and approaches; support analytical and reporting processes in all departments. Assist in establishing product quality goals, metrics and test methods during new product design and development. Insure quality of all purchased components and sourced finished product through management of an incoming inspection program. Lead investigation and resolution of all product quality related customer issues. This will involve some or all of the following: visits to customer sites, meetings, technical investigation/root cause analysis and management of product rework activities. Act as change agent in challenging existing manufacturing and quality assurance approaches and performance metrics. Define strategic initiatives to improve first-pass quality and productivity in the manufacturing unit.  BACKGROUND PROFILE: B.S.
