Guardian, Science and Technology Center has an outstanding career opportunity located outside the Ann Arbor, MI area. We are seeking an experienced Applications Development Engineer to join our company. The ideal candidate will possess: - Bachelors Degree in Material Science, Optics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering, Master degree is preferred. Experience with statistical methods and analysis. - Experience in the residential or commercial flat glass products market is preferred. - 5-7 years of experience in business development and program management. - Ability to take charge and lead with confidence, builds on trust and respect, and is low maintenance. - Experience with complex projects; ability to analyze problems quickly, and the development of corrective actions. - Strong negotiation and influencing skills coupled with clear abilities for presenting and communicating ideas and concepts. - Ability to make decisions and take action under pressure. - Experience with MS Project and program management principles. - Experience with MS office software. - Skills to manage internal and external customer interactions. Applications Development Engineer – Flat Glass The Applications Development Engineer for Flat Glass Projects is a key member of the Applications Development Group. The ideal candidate will have a broad mix of experience and skills in the areas of business development, product development, product management, marketing, and manufacturing operations. The selected individual will be responsible for identifying potential products and ideas and developing the business case in cooperation with Technical Marketing, Sales, Business Development, and the Guardian Flat Glass Business Partners; presenting the business case to senior leadership for approval; developing product requirements and specifications; developing a project schedule and project management plan in support of development activities; working with Technical Marketing and Sales to develop the product marketing collateral materials and the product launch strategy; coordinating pre-launch and post-launch activities with internal and external customers around the world; and managing post launch product life cycle support. The nexus of this position is product life cycle support, customer support, and customer satisfaction. Domestic and international travel is required approximately 40% of the time. In the business development role, the individual will be responsible for: - Identifies potential product/business opportunities by: - Conducting periodic “needs” surveys with Technical Marketing, Sales, Business Development, and Guardian Flat Glass Business Partners. - Participating in Sales and Marketing discussions, industry seminars, and trade shows. - Keeping abreast of industry trends and announcements via industry literature, patents, and forums. - Consolidates all opportunities into a master list. Research comparable products and performance/cost attributes. - Develops project scope, product requirements, and product specifications in coordination with Technical Marketing, Sales, and the Science and Technology Research Groups. - Develops a business case for attractive opportunities in coordination with Technical Marketing, Sales, and the Science and Technology Research Groups. Presents business case to Sr. Management. - Responsible for all pre-launch discussions and coordination. In the program management role, the individual will be responsible for: - Working within the Guardian Stage Gate Product Development Methodology. - Develops and manages the project management plan which includes agreed upon deliverables, roles and responsibilities, assumptions, communication plans, risk and action item registers, risk identification and analysis; risk mitigation strategies, and cost accounting. - Develops comprehensive project schedules that identifies tasks, development cost projections, needed internal and external resources, and time required leading to a flawless product launch. - Coordinates periodic project reviews and status reports. - Tracks progress and updates schedules on a daily basis. - Coordinates internal and external fabrication support. - Works with the Research Groups and the Product Compliance and Quality Group to integrate new testing and validation technology, develop test procedures, and identify equipment requirements. - Works with the Customer Engineering Group and the internal/external fabrication partners to identify and specify best methods for product packaging, product transportation, and product storage. - Conducts project post-mortem 6 months after launch, validates project assumptions and sales forecasts one year after product launch. In the customer support role, the individual will be responsible for: - Expedient response to product failures or field issues. - Developing corrective action plans to quickly address and respond to customer issues; coordinate necessary resources; develops a communication plan that brings together the customer and the response team as often as needed to keep the customer informed and to protect the Guardian strategic interests. - Monitoring product performance, sales, and credits on a monthly basis. Identified trends that require assistance from Customer Engineering or the Science and Technology Research Groups. - Being willing, able, and ready to travel to the customer site to correct product or production issues. - Following-thru with the customers for problem resolution. - Developing and communicating best known methods and procedures which improve yields and customer satisfaction. The Application Development Engineer must possess the following traits: - Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed. - Entrepreneurial spirit and mindset. - High energy, self-motivated, take charge, and ownership. - Flexible and adaptable to changing environments. - Strong perseverance coupled with a “will not fail attitude”. - Excellent analytical, organizational, and conflict management skills. - Excellent verbal and written skills. - Leadership potential to develop into positions of higher scope and responsibility.
